Chi è Banksy? Poche persone che si occupano di arte non conoscono il suo stile e la sua firma, ma nessuno sa dire con esattezza chi sia: nonostante abbia conquistato il pubblico di mezzo mondo, continua a rimanere fuori dallo starsystem e a lavorare in mezzo alla gente comune. Di lui si sanno poche cose: nato aBristol nel 1974, ha iniziato la sua attività di street artist a 21 anni, ma solo intorno al 2003 è diventato famoso. Secondo le testimonianze di chi l’ha conosciuto, è un uomo modesto e schivo, anche se chi ha in mente le sue opere penserebbe esattamente il contrario. Spessoa sfondo satirico, i suoi stencil parlano di politica, cultura ed etica: una guerrilla art che in pochi anni ha tappezzato i muri di tutto il mondo, da Bristol a Londra, dalle gabbie dello zoo di Barcellona al muro di Gerusalemme.

Who’s Bansky? There are few people who care for art and don’t know his style, but nobody can tell exactly who he is. Although he conquered the public of a half world, he remains out of the starsystem and he continues working among ordinary people. Few information about him are well-known: he was born in Bristol in 1974, he started working as a street artist when he was 21, but he’s become famous only in 2003. According to people who met him, he is a modest and bashful, although his works of art are the exact opposite. His ironical stencils are about politics, culture and ethic: a guerrilla art  that in some years has covered the walls of the whole world, from Bristol to London, from the zoo in Barcelona to the wall of Jerusalem.  

Affrontando gravi problemi sociali con disinvoltura e acuto senso dell'umorismo, le sue opere mostrano i risvolti più duri di capitalismo, guerra, povertà. La sua vena satirica non risparmia nemmeno gli artisti suoi contemporanei, le cui opere spesso considera "inferiori".

His works face serious social problems showing the worst implications of capitalism, war and poverty but with ease and sense of humor. He satirizes on the contemporaneous artists, whose works are often considered “inferior”.

Molti ritengono che Banksysemplifichi eccessivamente le tematiche di cui tratta per fare presa sulle masse. Altri critici, in particolare i rappresentanti del Keep Britain Tidy, addirittura ritengono che la le sue opere siano un reato perché offrono un esempio negativo agli altri aspiranti graffitari.

Many people say that Bansky simplifies excessively these topics to catch on the masses. Other critics, in particular the Keep Britain Tidy representatives, even  consider that his works are a crime, because they give a negative example to the aspirants to graffiti art.

E in effetti Banksy è uno street artist difficile da contenere: memorabili sono le sue incursioni nei musei più importanti del mondo per collocare “abusivamente” le opere da lui realizzate, e le sue affermazione sul mercato dell’arte. Spesso ha invitatoi cittadini a non acquistare "street art" a meno che non sia nata con l’apposito scopo di essere venduta. “L’arte dei graffiti ha già una vita abbastanza dura così com'è, tra chi vuole rimuoverli e chi che si diverte a disegnarci su i baffi. È importante lasciare l'arte di strada nel luogo in cui è nata e a cui appartiene”, ha dichiarato.

Bansky is actually a street artist difficult to control. He used to enter the greatest museums of the world and place illegally his own works and his statements on the market of art. He often invited the citizens not to buy any “street art” unless it has been created with the aim of being sold. He stated: “Graffiti art is already difficult enough as it is, some people want to eliminate graffiti and others draw mustache on them. It’s important to leave the street art at the place where it was born and to which it belongs.”

Banksy ha un atteggiamento disinvolto anche verso il diritto d'autore: non è interessato al copywrite, e anzi incoraggia la riproduzione delle sue opere per il divertimento personale degli emulatori, sostenendo addirittura che molte copie sono di qualità superiore agli originali.

Bansky relates very easily with copyright too. He is not interested to royalties at all, he encourages the reproduction of his works and the emulator’s  entertainment instead. He asserts that many copies have a better quality than the original works.

La sua firma, che porti l’immagine di una cameriera, di un ufficiale del Settecento o di un bambino, rimane sempre inequivocabile e coerente. Può far sorridere o far abbassare gli occhi per la vergogna, ma è difficile che lasci indifferenti.

His style is always unmistakable and coherent, no matter if it represents a waitress, an officer from the XVIII century or a child. You can laugh or look down with shame but it can’t leave you cold.
