Nick Devereux at the Bugada & Cargnel Gallery in Paris
It is a visionary Orpheus the one we see at the Gallery "Bugada & Cargnel" in Rue de L’Equerre n. 7-9, Paris. His mission impossible is to bring back to light disappeared images, mutilated from the ravages of time, that we thought lost forever. Oil painting, charcoal, pastels are the instruments of a dreamy archaeology of the image.
For his first exposition, Nick Devereux (who was born in Panama City in 1978 but now lives in Paris) presents different works which are the outcome of a philological reconstruction process of paintings, frescos, lost or destroyed photographies. Starting from the left marks of these artefacts, the artist creates small sculptures with waste matter, pieces of glass, corners. The palette deliberately seeks the confrontation with the painters of the past, among these Las Meninas' Velasquez. The double filter purifies the composition, putting its essential lines in a white and unreal space. Small groups animated by a vibrant dramatic tension, bulky masses hide the faces.
Devereux's research is ambitious and the link between the stories of those images which he tries to recover and the pictorial result is sometimes too complex. The narration has difficulty in materializing through the pictorial representation. Despite all, the visual result is seductive as well as the poetic attempt to save the images from the history accidents. Therefore, Devereux's research appears young and promising, which is the reason why it will be really interesting to follow its evolution.
